Czech Republic New Coalition Government Opposes EU Migration Agreement

(MENAFN) The Czech Republic's newly formed coalition is set to abandon the European Union's migration agreement, opting instead to craft its own asylum framework, Radio Prague International confirmed.

Andrej Babis, the populist prime minister whose ANO party secured victory in October's election, announced plans to scrap the pact entirely. His administration intends to draft alternative migration and asylum protocols while working with other EU nations on external solutions.

During a Tuesday press briefing, Babis stated the government will actively participate in efforts by EU countries to find real solutions to migration outside the territory of the union.

Former Interior Minister Vit Rakusan warned that abandoning the agreement would strip the nation of critical enforcement mechanisms. According to Rakusan, by rejecting the migration pact the country would lose the tools against illegal migration that would remain with neighboring states.

The Czech stance mirrors Hungary's position, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban has refused to implement the pact, declaring his government will not spend "a single dime on them."

EU member governments ratified the Pact on Migration and Asylum in May 2024 despite resistance from Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia. The framework seeks to balance asylum seeker distribution among member nations and overhaul the bloc's frontier and asylum infrastructure.
